About J. Harris Anderson
Two passions directed my life from an early age: riding and writing.
I wrote my first book when I was about seven.
It was a tale of adventurers landing on an uncharted island where they encountered dinosaurs and other dangers. I was both author and illustrator. I was, therefore, at the forefront (if a bit prematurely) of the graphic novel craze. I also designed the cover, punched holes in two pieces of cardboard, ran string through the holes, and bound the pages together.
My skills as an artist and bookbinder were scant and soon dismissed. But the writing drive remained.
Education
Following studies at The University of Virginia and George Mason University, where I earned BS and MBA degrees, I spent the next several decades as a marketing specialist for a variety of employers and clients. That path eventually led to writing mostly about horse sports, specifically the world of foxhunting, and country life. I suppose you’d consider me a late bloomer in that regard (hence the significance of the blue cardinal flower).
These days...
I share a modest farm in Virginia hunt country with my wife, Ellen, plus two dogs and a few horses. I’ve served as a foxhunting field leader, whipper-in, and racecourse outrider. My connection to country life and all things equine is strengthened by my role as managing editor for In & Around Horse Country, a national publication covering a variety of equine-related topics.
